All About Education
J. P. Irwin Tutoring is a classically informed tutoring program designed for the modern student. We utilise the best of modern educational practices to deliver an English program steeped in the classical tradition. Based in Brisbane, we have served students all over Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Seeing students exceed their expectations and transcend their school requirements is our passion. We enjoy the challenge of meeting a student’s educational needs and moving them to heights beyond what they ever imagined.
We are dedicated to forming minds that can think, speak, read and write with power and clarity. Dynamic language skills are fundamental to success in almost every aspect of our lives and provide us a freedom of thought highly valued in today’s creative economy.
Our classical roots mean students are learning from the greatest writers and thinkers the world has ever known in a conversational environment. Challenging students to engage with the great thinkers encourages depth of thought and imagination by which language skills are best refined. In our classes a typical student may read texts written at any time over the last 3000 years. These include but are not limited to Homer, Virgil, St Augustine, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Brontë, Hawthorne, and Hemmingway. Our approach cultivates not only a student’s English skills but enriches their worldview and broadens their perspective.
We pride ourselves on standing alongside our students and being their guide in their learning journey.
“The Limits of My Language Mean the Limits of My World”
- Ludwig Wittgenstein
+ Increase literacy:
Reading and writing will be required for all endeavours of life, and impaired communication skills are a painful road block to overcome in a highly competitive workforce.
+ Improve Grades:
Achieve academic success without the unnecessary stress. Students are under immense pressure to perform, and so many students feel lost when it comes to exam time.
+ Expand Perspective:
Language is the door to ideas. A creative and logical perspective is cultivated through language. The better one grasps language the better positioned they are to view the world around them.
Writing
Success academically, emotionally and relationally relies upon our ability to clearly communicate. Whether it’s an email to a boss, text message to a friend, or an essay for school, we all depend upon our ability to express ourselves. Writing enables us to logically and accurately communicate information, writing empowers us to connect with people and share experiences, and clear writing creates opportunities. Contact us and learn about how we help students achieve writing success in all parts of life.
Reading
Robust and well-developed English skills begin with reading and especially with reading well. There is a world of difference between the casual reader of simple books and the intentional read of deep literature. This difference is recognisable in both their ability to communicate and their ability to comprehend. Books provide avenues into worldviews that enrich the lives and minds of the readers. Contact us and learn more about how we cultivate the habit of deep reading in our students.
Speaking
Confidently presenting a speech and clearly articulating a presentation demand finely tuned English skills. The art of public speaking, also known as rhetoric, was understood by the ancients as a pillar of a good education. The ancients realised that success often required the ability to speak to the hearts and minds of an audience. This art form is all the more important today in our world of mass communication. Beyond the Basics
Deep, comprehensive and personal understanding of the English language arts
Grammar, the first and the very foundation of the trivium, is necessary for all other skills in the language arts. Studying grammar builds the structures in our minds to better understand the function of words and the construction of sentences.
Learning from the greats like Hemmingway, Steinbeck, and Shakespeare, students become familiar with and master tried and tested techniques used by real authors. Students improve their creativity while building their knowledge of effective storytelling.
The rules of rational thought, once taught in Australian high school classrooms, are cognitive tools needed for perceptive analysis of texts and the persuasive construction of essays. There are very few things in life that do not require this profound skill.
Writing essays, learning academic language, conveying ideas in succinct logical manner, all of these skills are at the core of academic writing. However, none of these come naturally. By building out these individual skills, students learn how to write intelligently.
The classic art of persuasion, the capstone course of a classical education, rhetoric draws from students their talent in wordsmithing. Rhetoric empowers students to present themselves well before others and become a leader among their peers.
Learning how to comprehend the intricate nuances of human communication is best taught in the study of literature. Literature trains one to not only read and think more deeply and clearly, it aids one in seeing the world in new and creative ways.
